Search for interior costs and you will get confident numbers. What you will rarely get is the date those numbers were calculated, or the specification behind them.
There are four reasons an old interior design quotation figure stops being true:

The Rs 1,500 versus Rs 1,000 problem
Here is the question worth asking any contractor, and it is pure arithmetic rather than salesmanship.
Suppose you walk into a plywood dealer yourself and the sheet you want costs Rs 1,500. You are one walk-in customer with no credit account and no volume. Now a contractor offers to supply, cut, edge-band, assemble, transport and install furniture made from that same sheet, and their all-in price implies the board cost them Rs 1,000.
That gap has to come from somewhere. There are only a limited number of somewheres:
- they are buying a different board and calling it the same thing
- they are buying a thinner board than specified
- they are not paying GST, which means you have no invoice and no recourse
- they intend to raise the price mid-project once your flat is stripped
- they are absorbing a loss they cannot actually absorb, and the project will stall
Bulk purchasing is real and genuine trade discounts exist. A manufacturer with a factory and a running account does buy better than a walk-in customer. But a trade discount narrows a gap; it does not invert it. When an offer sits below the visible retail cost of the raw material, the discount explanation stops being sufficient.
The honest test is not the total at the bottom of the page. It is whether the quotation tells you, line by line, what is being bought at what rate, so that the arithmetic can be checked at all.
Nine places a cheap quote finds the missing money
When a low interior design quotation is delivered at the promised price, the saving almost always came from one of these. None of them is visible on the day of handover. All of them are visible in year three.
1. Grade substitution. MR-grade commercial ply supplied where BWP was specified. Identical in a photograph, very different beside a sink in a Kolkata monsoon.
2. Thickness substitution. A 16mm carcass becomes 12mm. Shelves sag under load within two years, and the failure looks like bad luck rather than bad specification.
3. MDF where plywood was quoted. Cheaper, heavier, and unforgiving about moisture. In a humid city this is the substitution that causes the most regret.
4. Unbranded hardware. Hinges and drawer channels are where a quotation hides the most money. A soft-close channel from a known brand and a generic lookalike differ by a large multiple and are indistinguishable on day one.
5. Fewer fixings than the design needs. Two hinges on a tall shutter instead of three. Half the screws. It holds until it does not.
6. Edge banding skipped or downgraded. Unbanded or thinly banded edges let moisture into the core. This is the single cheapest corner to cut and one of the most damaging in Kolkata.
7. Thinner laminate. 0.8mm specified, 0.6mm or less supplied. It chips at the edges and shows wear quickly on horizontal surfaces.
8. Labour undercut. Underpaid or rushed carpentry produces gaps, misaligned shutters and doors that do not close square. Rework is charged to you.
9. Tax left out entirely. A quotation with no GST line is not a 18% discount. It means no invoice, no paper trail, no warranty you can enforce, and no protection if the work fails.
A quotation that specifies brand, grade and thickness on every line makes all nine of these impossible to do quietly. That is the entire point of itemisation.

Ask for the specification in writing. Board brand, grade and thickness. Laminate brand and thickness. Hardware brand and model. If any of these are missing, the rest of the exercise cannot be done, which is itself the answer.
Price one line yourself. Pick the wardrobe. Call or visit a plywood dealer and ask the current rate for that exact board. Compare it against the rate in the quotation.
Check the GST line. Plywood, MDF, particle board and wooden furniture are taxed at 18%. If tax is absent from the document, ask why in writing and keep the reply.
Read the exclusions before the total. A quote that is 20% lower while excluding electrical work, transport, installation and painting is not lower.
