Kolkata’s climate is the single most underrated factor in an interior budget. High humidity for much of the year is hard on the wrong materials.

MDF is cheaper than plywood but far less forgiving around sinks, dishwashers and external walls. In a Kolkata kitchen the saving rarely justifies the risk.
Apartment size. A 900 sq ft 3BHK and a 1,500 sq ft 3BHK are different projects. Per-square-foot rates make comparison easier than headline totals.
How much is custom-built. Custom carpentry uses space better and costs more than bought furniture. Most budget overruns start here.
Finish level. The same wardrobe in laminate versus acrylic can differ by a large multiple with identical internal storage.
Civil and electrical changes. Moving a wall, relocating plumbing or rewiring adds cost that furniture-focused quotes often leave out.
The cheapest quotation is usually the least complete. Before comparing two numbers, check whether each one includes:

Full-height storage. Floor-to-ceiling wardrobes and overhead units add storage without taking floor area — valuable in apartments where circulation space is tight.
A restrained living room. Neutral bases, wood tones and warm layered lighting read as premium without premium spend. The cost sits in the lighting plan, not in the finishes.
The balcony as a real room. A green corner, a reading seat or a morning coffee spot. Among the cheapest square footage you will ever improve.
A kitchen built for maintenance. Moisture-resistant carcass, easy-clean shutters, real ventilation, and storage matched to how you actually cook.
A third bedroom that does two jobs. Work-from-home by day, guest room at night — a wall bed or sofa-cum-bed with a dedicated desk makes this practical rather than a compromise.
